Grand Theft Auto Online is getting a top-down Micro Machines-style racing mode
Rockstar Games announces new mode to launch in late April.
Rockstar Games has announced a new stunt racing mode for the online portion of Grand Theft Auto 5. Called Tiny Racers, the top-down, Micro Machines-style mode is set to release as a free update next week.
A trailer showing the vehicular carnage in action (embedded below) confirmed that the mode will include cars, buggies and bikes, and will be added to the game on PS4, Xbox One and PC next Tuesday, 25 April.
Weapons (as you'd expect from GTA) and other items will also be included as pick-ups on the various courses. Further details were not made available, including whether or not custom courses will be supported.
The announcement comes just a day after Codemasters revealed the first look at a brand new game in the Micro Machines series that clearly inspired Rockstar to develop Tiny Racers.
Micro Machines World Series was also set a release date of 23 June.
Grand Theft Auto 5 first launched in September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360 before being ported to PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014, and PC in April 2015. Support for the older consoles was dropped later in 2015, with subsequent updates and events for GTA Online supporting only the newer devices.
GTA Online's continued success is one of the reasons sales of the overall game have been so consistently impressive. In February Rockstar parent company Take Two revealed that sales of GTA 5 had topped 75 million, ranking it among the best selling video games of all time.
"The sustained performance of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online is a remarkable achievement and a testimony to Rockstar Games' tireless commitment to excellence, especially since these titles initially launched more than three years ago," said Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick at the time.
