Guillermo Varela becomes first casualty of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United clear-out
KEY POINTS
- Uruguayan completes season-long loan move to Frankfurt.
- James Wilson and Tyler Blackett also expected to leave in coming weeks.
Manchester United full-back Guillermo Varela has become the first victim of Jose Mourinho's clear out at Old Trafford, joining Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan deal. Varela, 23, made his senior debut for United in December 2015, making 10 appearances in total under Louis van Gaal last season.
While he made an appearance off the bench in Mourinho's first game in charge against Wigan Athletic last weekend, the Uruguayan is not part of the new manager's plans and did not travel with the rest of the squad to China for the club's preseason tour in order to complete his move to Germany. United confirmed the move via their official website.
United have the options of Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia at right-back, while new signing Eric Bailly can also be deployed in that role. Phil Jones has also been used at right-back in training, a position he was often used in following his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in 2011.
More members of the United squad are expected to leave the club ahead of the 2015-16 season.
Tyler Blackett and James Wilson were also left out of the pre-season squad that travelled to China and started for the club's reserves in a friendly against Altringham on Friday. Wilson scored twice on his debut for the club in 2014, but has struggled to make an impact on the first-team, having also been hampered by injury. The Sun claim the 20-year-old is now poised to join Championship side Fulham on a season-long loan.
Reading, meanwhile, have been credited with interest in Blackett, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Celtic.
United began their tour of China with a heavy defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Friday, losing 4-1 to the Bundesliga giants in Shanghai.
