Hillary Clinton's Throwback Thursday: Dressing up as Dolly Parton for her 48th birthday
Hillary Clinton shared a photo of herself dressed up as Dolly Parton on Instagram on Thursday (5 November). The Throwback Thursday photo of the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate was taken at her 48th birthday party at the White House in 1995, when her husband, Bill Clinton, was president. The then-First Lady threw a Western square dance-themed birthday party and blew out candles on a barn-shaped cake.
Presidential historian Paul Boller's 1999 book Presidential Wives described how then-president Bill Clinton was "very taken by her [Hillary's] vivacity that he followed her around all evening, stroked her blonde curls, and told people gleefully that although she came from Chicago she was at heart a real Arkansas girl."
The hoedown-themed party was attended by 150 staffers and friends, reported the Spokesman-Review at the time. Hillary's Western look was completed with a curly blonde wig inspired by the legendary country singer.
"Tell you one, thing, folks," she reportedly said that evening. "The costume can go back in the morning, but I'm going to hang on to this wig!"
While Hillary had aspirations of dressing up as a country star 20 years ago, the presidential candidate laid out Halloween fancy dress ideas, based her signature looks from the past on her campaign website. The outfits included "Hipster Hillary," "Cold Shoulder Hillary" and "Texts from Hillary," based on a blog with meme of Clinton. The looks also appeared on Clinton's Snapchat account.
On Halloween this year, Clinton visited by four-year-old Sullivan Wood in South Carolina who was dressed up as the former US Secretary of State. "She loves her. We campaign together for Hillary and she even has a poster of her above her bed," Wood's mother told Buzzfeed News.
