Hillsborough: New inquests to be held
Following the new evidence presented to The High Court it has just been announced that the original inquest verdicts on the 96 Liverpool football fans that died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster on 15th April 1989 have been quashed.
The Attorney General Dominic Grieve said that fresh inquests will be heard for all the victims after fresh medical evidence clearly established that 41 of those who died after becoming trapped and crushed behind barriers, might have been saved. Had police followed the correct procedures for crowd control and crowding and let medical teams through to treat the trapped, injured and dying.
The original inquest verdicts angered many of the bereaved families who were told at the 1990 hearing that all Hillsborough's victims had been injured by 15:15 on the afternoon of the football match. But the Hillsborough Independent Panel, findings published in September was the revelation that 41 fans probably lived beyond that time.
