Large quantities of horsemeat have been found in bargain burgers on sale in Tesco, Lidl and Iceland according to investigations carried out by The Food Safety authority of Ireland. A total of 27 burger products were analysed, with 10 of them containing traces of horse DNA and 23 containing pig DNA.

It was revealed that the meat had come from two processing plants in the Irish Republic - Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods - and the Dalepak Hambleton plant in Yorkshire who supply the supermarket giants in the UK and Ireland. However neither of these factories slaughters horses or import horse meat there is concern as to where the horse meat came from

The Food safety authority went on to say there was no human health risk and the burgers had been removed .in response to the findings Tesco said it has removed all the related products and is "working... to ensure it does not happen again".
