Hurricane Matthew bangs the gong on Damian Marley's 1Xtra Live dream
Reggae superstar and son of the late Bob Marley will be replaced by grime artist Bugzy Malone.
Reggae star Damian Marley will no longer be performing at this weekend's 1Xtra Live. The Welcome To Jammrock hitmaker was forced to pulled out of the event after Hurricane Mathew caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean.
Hundreds were killed when Hurricane Matthew ravaged through the Caribbean at speeds of 145mph. The deadly storm has since travelled along a coast-hugging path in the US, making it the first major hurricane to hit the country in more than 10 years.
A tweet posted on the official Radio 1Xtra twitter page said that the 38-year-old star, who was due to take to the stage at Liverpool's Echo Arena on 7 October, was "unable to fly to the UK". But all is not lost— grime icon Bugzy Malone has been drafted in to fill in.
"We are pleased to announce that @TheBugzyMalone has been added to the lineup and will be performing at #1xtraLive tomorrow night," a statement said.
The high-profile gig will be the perfect opportunity for the Manchester-born MC to showcase some of the material from his latest EP Facing Time.
Speaking to IBtimes UK backstage at Parklife Festival 2016 Malone, real name Aaron Davis, said the body of work represented his outlook on fame. "Fame is a jail. Once you're famous, you're kind of locked into a situation and the concept behind this is that I'm in this jail. I'm facing time. I think people saw it and took it out of context."
He added: "[Once you're famous] you've definitely lost privacy but once you're out there you embrace it. I'm just getting to a stage now that I'm becoming comfortable, I'm just going to grow in the public eye and be myself."
Stormzy will headline the show with the like of Giggs, Wretch 32, Lady Leshurr and Craig David making up the impressive line-up. Fan can watch live the show live online from 8pm on Saturday.
