The last time we saw Amelia Thermopolis Renaldi aka Princess Mia of Genovia, she had successfully been crowned and was looking forward to a new romance with Nicholas Devereaux. Sixteen years later, however, the frenzy over the Anne Hathaway-Julie Andrews starring Princess Diaries films remains unchanged.

In fact, fans of the Genovian royalty are now freaking out over a latest piece of news. [Hint - a second sequel]

Before his untimely death in 2016, Garry Marshall – the director of the Princess Diaries franchise – had hinted at the possibilities of a third installment.

And looks like the rumours just grew strong with the latest hint from Meg Cabot, the author of the best-selling young adult novels, on which the films are based.

"So, who knows? [It] could happen, as we say," Cabot teased to Entertainment Weekly, adding that the third chapter might be a tribute to the late director.

"I am not allowed to say," the American author explained about the prospective plot for the third film. "But it's really more following the movie than the books, so if she — the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister ... which I personally would've thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going."

Cabot's revelation seems to be in line with what Andrews – who played Mia's grandmother and Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the films – said about the possibilities of a third movie earlier this year.

"There's talk about it. And [Anne's] very keen to do it. I would be very willingly and happily do it," Andrews told Buzzfeed. "I think we might do it in honour of him. Annie had an idea that she wanted to pursue about it, and I'm all for it, so if she'd like to..."

While it might be too early to talk about the cast or even the possible storyline, the very idea of a third installment to the Princess Diaries series seems to have sent fans into a meltdown.

"I will scream in Genovian if there's a Princess Diaries 3 plus she's a queen now!! She betta be married to Chris Pines!!" a super enthusiastic fan shared on Twitter.

Another admirer wrote: "Princess Diaries 3 is what every late 90s/early 00s girl deserves. I need to know what my girl Mia is up to bc she basically raised me."
