Ilkay Gundogan admits his future is uncertain amid Liverpool and Manchester City rumours
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has admitted his future remains undecided. The 25-year-old is among the most sought-after players in Europe, and has revealed he is still unsure if he will sign a contract extension with the Bundesliga outfit.
Gundogan says he has a strong emotional tie to the club. However, he also confessed he could leave the Westfalenstadion in the coming months, amid rumoured interest from the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Barcelona.
"There will be a decision at one point, but it depends on various factors," he said to Sky Sport in Germany. "Time will bring a decision, which hopefully will be very fair for everyone involved. We have nothing to hide, and we'll announce something when we have something to announce."
Gundogan was strongly linked with a move to Juventus during the January transfer window. Asked if he rejected a move to the Italian giants, Gundogan said: "I don't want to answer this, but since I am still a Borussia Dortmund player it shows that I still have this club in my heart very much, and it means a lot to me."
The reported Liverpool and Manchester City target admitted that, in the long-term, he hopes to be playing for a club that is regularly competing for trophies. "Those are the moments you can look back on after your career. That's why you play football, and love this sport," he said. "Titles are always the goal, especially when you have the quality as a team, but also as a player. It's a responsibility to chase that goal."
Gundogan – whose current contract expires in 2017 – was a key component of Jurgen Klopp's title-winning side at Borussia Dortmund. Klopp is now in charge of Liverpool and is apparently keen to be reunited with the all-action player in the summer transfer window. However, the Anfield club are likely to face stiff competition from a host of clubs across Europe.
