Indian Teenager Gang-raped and Burnt Alive by Three Men
A teenage girl has died after she was gang-raped and burnt alive by three men from a village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
The victim, aged 13 or 14, died in the hospital having sustained 80% burns in the attack, which took place in the Sirsa Kalaar area of Orai, in the district of Jalaun. Police teams have been deployed to track down the perpetrators.
The victim, an eighth-grader, was heading home along with her sister from a farm when she was snatched by three villagers, who dragged her away and gang-raped her.
The girl was reportedly set on fire by the rapists after she threatened to tell the rest of the village what they had done to her.
The victim's sister, who had managed to escape and raise the alarm, eventually returned with her parents and a group of villagers, but it was too late to save the girl.
The Times of India has named one of the attackers as local man Ram Bahadur, although the identities of the other attackers have yet to be revealed. According to news agency IANS, the parents of the victim have not filed a complaint against the criminals as yet.
Scores of rape cases have been reported across India almost every day following the the infamous Delhi gang-rape incident, which took place in December 2012 and prompted frenzied national debate.
