Overview

Hosts India's dominance at home continued in the second Test at Visakhapatnam, where they thrashed England by 246 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and come into the third game at Mohali full of confidence.

Skipper Virat Kohli led from the front with the bat scoring 167 in the first and 81 in the second innings to not only put his country in a dominant position but also take home the player of the match award. Off-spinner R Ashwin with a match-haul of eight for 119 played an important role in the win.

Among the other positives was the performance of Jayant Yadav on debut while Cheteshwar Pujara's hundred in the first innings helped lay a platform for India's win.

The absence of regular wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha due to injury means that Parthiv Patel will turn out for his country after a gap of eight years while the rest of the squad is expected to remain the same. With the pitch expected to aid spinners, India are the favourites to win at Chandigarh.

Their opponents England put up a fight at Vizag but were unable to prevent the hosts from trampling all over them. A number of players made small contributions but what they needed the most was for one of their batsmen to go on and make a big score.

The team management would be impressed by the performance of their quick bowlers especially in conditions that are far from suitable for them with Stuart Broad arguably registering his best bowling performance in the second innings picking up four wickets for 33 runs.

England have confirmed that Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes will return to the side for the third Test with Stuart Broad and Ben Duckett making way for them. Spinner Zafar Ansari who has had a poor series so far might be replaced by veteran Gareth Batty in the playing eleven.
