Overview

Kings XI have been handed another opportunity to reach the final after failing to beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Qualifer 1. The game took place on Wednesday at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, as rains prevented play from commencing on Tuesday.

George Bailey chose that his side will field after winning the toss. But that decision looked to have backfired as the home side set a target of 164 runs to chase in 20 overs.

Akshar Patel was their star bowler conceding just 11 runs in four overs and took two wickets. Mitchell Johnson too grabbed two wickets while Karanveer Singh added three to his name.

Attempting to chase the total, Kings XI failed scuppered and could manage only 135 runs in 20 overs, thus losing by 28 runs. Sanjay Bangar's side topped the table with 22 points in the previous stage suffering only three defeats.

Meanwhile, the Super Kings retained their hopes of reaching the sixth IPL final in seven years, after beating Mumbai Indians by seven wickets on Wednesday at the Brabourne stadium.

Their skipper MS Dhoni opted to field after winning the toss, as the defending champions got off to a bright start with Lendl Simmons and Michael Hussey on the crease.

The opening pair put up a partnership of 76 runs for the first wicket before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the Australian batsman in the 10th over. John Wright's side made 173 runs before running out of overs, losing eight wickets in the process.

Mohit Sharma struck thrice in his last two overs while Ashish Nehra and Ravindra Jadeja added two wickets each to their tally. Ravichandran Ashwin nicked the crucial wicket of Corey Anderson.

The Chennai based outfit started the game on a high with Dwayne Smith and Faf du Plessis on the crease. The pair faced 20 balls each, making 24 and 35 runs respectively before their dismissal in the seventh over.

Suresh Raina stepped on to the middle of the field and combined with David Hussey after Brendon McCullum's departed making 14 runs.

The 27-year-old made 54 runs, which included a four to finish the game while David added 40 runs from 29 balls. CSK made 176 runs from 18.4 overs to go one step closer to the showdown at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, on 1 June.

In this year's IPL, CSK have lost both their matches to KXIP in the previous round. However, in this do-or-die fixture, Dhoni will be keen to ensure that his players perform well in order to stand a chacne for lifting the coveted trophy for the third time by progressing for Sunday's showdown against KKR.

One could expect Chennai coach, Stephen Fleming to stick to the same side that beat Mumbai with three fast bowlers and an equal number of spinners threatening to break through the opposition batting order.

On the other hand, the Mohali based outfit will surely analyse their performances in the previous game and look to right the wrongs and make use of the second chance to reach the IPL final for the first time.
