Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt adopt a sci-fi look in first stills for Passengers
Directed by The Imitation Game's Morten Tyldum, the upcoming film will be part blockbuster, part character drama.
Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt adopt a full-on sci-fi look in the first images for romance-turned-space drama, Passengers. Revealed by Entertainment Weekly, the debut shots see Pratt don a slim-line spacesuit alongside Lawrence in a futuristic interior while the twosome look in deep conversation. The second image is a lot less still-like and sees the A-listers looking directly into the camera against a bright blue background.
Unsurprisingly, Passengers takes place on a luxurious interstellar spacecraft which is part-way through a 120-year journey to its destination, Homestead II. Due to the lengthy travel time, all 5,000 people aboard the ship are supposed to be in suspended animation but when an incident rouses one passenger named Jim (Pratt), he believes he'll be stuck travelling alone. That is, until he discovers another Aurora (Lawrence), who has also been awakened and the pair soon begin to fall in love just as they discover that the ship is malfunctioning and endangering its entire population.
Talking about the film's concept to EW, director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) described Jon Spaihts' script as "one of those stories that really grabs you. It's very smart and funny and clever and such a page turner I couldn't put [the script] down. Every 10 pages, something new happens," he said.
Noting that the film is part science-fiction blockbuster and part character drama, the Norwegian filmmaker also stated: "It's a very intimate movie while taking place on this epic scale. For me, it's a story about what's important to live a full life. What are the things we need as humans? It's not afraid to entertain but at the same time it asks big questions about what does it mean to really feel happy. Every generation has its love story. I feel like this is it. I had to do it."
Passengers also stars Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne and is scheduled to reach US cinemas on 21 December 2016. It will be released in the UK on the 23rd.
