John Aldridge: Liverpool must follow Danny Ings signing with a marquee striker
Former Liverpool star John Aldridge has hailed the arrival of Danny Ings, but warns Brendan Rodgers that he must sign another marquee striker "who guarantees 20 goals a season".
The Merseysiders announced on Monday 8 June that Ings will join the club once his contract with Burnley expires on 1 July, although they are still negotiating a compensation fee with The Clarets.
Having scored 11 goals last season, the former Burnley star will bolster the Anfield attack alongside Divock Origi. Mario Balotelli, Ricky Lambert and Fabio Borini have all struggled to cope with the absences of Daniel Sturridge and the departure of Luis Suarez in the past year.
Aldridge has claimed that even though Ings has great potential, Rodgers still needs to sign a "finished article."
"[Ings is] a no-brainer. He looks a threat and the lad's got great potential," Aldridge said to BBC Radio 5 Live, but added: "We need a really big marquee signing."
"It's not happened for Mario Balotelli or Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert is not getting any younger. They have been very conservative in their dealings and they still have a lot of money in the account ready to spend," Aldridge said.
"You need a striker who guarantees 20 goals a season and they don't come cheap."
Rodgers had not hidden his intention in signing a big-name top scorer this summer amid links with a number of stars, including Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke and La Liga sensation Luciano Vietto.
