Jokes aside, Twitter also remembers Jerry Lewis as a 'sexist, xenophobic Trump supporter'
The Hollywood icon, who died on 20 August, often stated that he thought women could not be good comedians.
Hollywood comedic actor Jerry Lewis passed away on 20 August at the age of 91 and while fans, fellow comedians and other members of the entertainment industry celebrated his contributions, a number of people took to Twitter to remember the filmmaker/producer as a Trump supporter.
In 2015, The Ladies Man actor criticised then-President Barack Obama while praising Donald Trump. "He's a showman and we've never had a showman in the president's chair," Lewis told World Over's Raymond Arroyo.
In the interview, he went on to offer his opinions on the refugee crisis and said that they "should stay where the hell they are".
"No one has worked harder for the human condition than I have, but they're not part of the human condition," Lewis explained. "If 11 guys in the group of 10,000 are ISIS, how can I take the chance? I don't want to lose another Frenchman or another Englishman. That bothers me."
The year-and-a-half-old video has now begun making the rounds on social media following Lewis' death with online critics calling him out for being a "sexist, xenophobic Trump supporter".
Many have also begun pointing out his comments regarding female comedians in which he opined that they were not funny.
"I cannot sit and watch a lady diminish her qualities to the lowest common denominator," Lewis said at a Cannes Film Festival press conference in 2013. "I just can't do that."
He had previously explained that while he was not offended by women in comedy, it "sets me back a bit".
"I, as a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world," he had said in reference to Lucille Ball, while speaking at the 1998 Aspen Comedy Arts Festival.
He managed to anger women again in 2014 when he said that comedy was unsuitable for persons of the gender.
"Seeing a woman project the kind of aggression that you have to project as a comic just rubs me wrong," Lewis said. "I mean you got some very, very funny people that do beautiful work — but I have a problem with the lady up there that's going to give birth to a child — which is a miracle."
