Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto back in Barcelona training ahead of Manchester City match
KEY POINTS
- Spanish duo missed the 4-0 win over Deportivo la Coruna due to injury.
- Lionel Messi, Samuel Umtiti and Ivan Rakitic returned at weekend.
- Jasper Cillessen is the only expected absentee to face Pep Guardiola's side.
Barcelona have received a major boost ahead of the Champions League game with Manchester City on Wednesday (19 October), with Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto back in training. Back-up goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is now the only first-team squad member in the treatment room, with Lionel Messi, Samuel Umtiti and Ivan Rakitic all returning from their respective injuries in the weekend's 4-0 victory over Deportivo la Coruna.
Alba and Sergio Roberto both missed the win over the Galicians after picking up injuries on international duty.
Alba pulled out of the Spanish national team after he picked up an injury in his left thigh during the World Cup qualifier against Italy. He missed the subsequent game with Albania, while on 7 October Barcelona ruled him out for 10 days. His compatriot Sergi Roberto picked up a muscle strain in training days later.
Barcelona set no return date for the latter, but the pair both missed the victory over Deportivo.
However, the full-backs look ready for a return to action against Manchester City, with the duo returning to training on Monday morning.
This would be a big boost for Luis Enrique, as Barcelona had been forced to switch to a 3-4-3 formation at the weekend due to doubts about Aleix Vidal's ability to cover for Sergi Roberto at right-back.
Luis Enrique could thus field his gala XI against Manchester City, with just reserve goalie Cillessen the only expected absentee. Messi and Rakitic returned from injury against Deportivo, with the Argentine scoring the fourth goal just minutes after coming from the bench. Umtiti also made the substitute bank against the Galicians after missing the four previous games with injury.
