Jose Mourinho hopes injury-hit Chelsea duo Gary Cahill and Diego Costa are fit for Arsenal clash
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hopeful Gary Cahill will be available for the Community Shield meeting with Arsenal on 2 August despite suffering a broken nose in the friendly against Barcelona on 29 July.
The Blues boss is less certain, however, over Diego Costa, who was forced to limp off with a hamstring problem as his side drew 2-2 in Washington DC before winning on penalties.
Cahill, 29, rose to head in a equaliser for his side in the 86th minute from Willian's corner but took a blow from Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip in the process. Mourinho is not worried about his defender missing the season's curtain raiser at Wembley though.
"Cahill has a chance of a broken nose, maybe yes, maybe no," Mourinho said via Chelsea's official website. "If no, perfect. If yes, he will get a mask tomorrow to be ready for Sunday [against Arsenal]."
Costa meanwhile featured for an hour against Luis Enrique's side but was replaced by Loic Remy after suffering another hamstring strain.
"Diego felt a little thing in his hamstring," Mourinho added. "We believe it is just a feeling, no more than that, but we have to wait."
Eden Hazard scored a sublime solo effort, striding past four Barcelona players to give his side the lead after 10 minutes in front of nearly 80,000 fans at the FedEx Field.
Luis Suarez drew the Champions League holders level early in the second half before Sandro Ramirez struck after the hour mark to put his side ahead.
Cahill's late header forced a shootout though, where Radamel Falcao, Victor Moses, Ramires and Loic Remy all found the back of the net.
Croatian starlet Alen Halilovic meanwhile saw his chipped effort come back off the bar while Thibaut Courtois saved Gerard Pique's effort.
