Jose Mourinho makes decision on four Manchester United players' contracts at Old Trafford
Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Ashley Young are the four United players.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to trigger the option of extending the contracts of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Ashley Young until 2019.
The four players' current deals at Old Trafford will run down after the end of this season, with an option to further extend them by a year. According to the Telegraph, the Red Devils are looking to secure the immediate future of these players by invoking a 12-month extension clause in their current deals.
Mute and Blind have failed to feature regularly this season, with the duo making a collective of 10 starts in the Premier League this season. Herrera was one of the standout players at Old Trafford last season, helping United win the EFL Cup and the Europa League.
Talks over a new deal with Herrera have been taking place for the last 12 months. However, the midfielder is yet to agree an extension with the 20-time English champions. This has not stopped him from being linked with a return to Spain.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Atletico Madrid are close to reaching an agreement with Herrera on a free-transfer next summer. The Spanish capital club wants the former Athletic Bilbao man not to agree extension of his current deal by a year, which will allow them to sign him for nothing after the end of this season.
Young has featured in the left-back position ahead of Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Blind. However, the England international will be 33 next July and is not seen as a long-term player in that position at United.
Mourinho still wants to secure the immediate future of Mata, Herrera, Blind and Young by triggering their 12-month extension clause in order to stop them from leaving for nothing after the end of this campaign.
The former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager will then have time till the next summer transfer window on taking a decision on the quartet's future. Mata will turn 30 in April and has failed to get into the starting lineup in his preferred number 10 role despite Henrikh Mkhitaryan's recent struggles.
Arsenal's Mesut Ozil has been identified as a target by Mourinho. The German international will be available on a free transfer next summer. Should he make a move to United, Mourinho is likely to allow Mata to leave the club.
