Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is determined to make a move for young German star Julian Draxler in a deal which could be worth up to £37m.
Wenger has big plans for the 20-year-old as thoughts turn to transforming the Schalke attacking midfielder into another Mesut Ozil.
The Gunners are prepared to meet the youngster's €45m release clause and are treating the Germany international as a priority target believing he could be the club's next marquee signing.
There were suggestions that Draxler could be heading to London for a medical this week but conflicting reports say that he is instead heading to Munich for treatment on a ruptured tendon that could keep him out until March.
Worst rumour of the day
Just as Tottenham's season is picking up comes the news that three of the six players Spurs signed during a £100m summer spending spree are heading for the door in search of more game-time.
It's rumoured that Erik Lamela, Etienne Capoue and Nacer Chadli are not happy at the north London club and their eyes are beginning to wander.
Added to the concern is the fact that Lewis Holtby, who signed this time last year, is desperate to play and is looking close to a making a return to former club Schalke.
Frenchman Capoue, who was signed from Toulouse for £9m, has indicated that he is keen for a move as Italian side Napoli who are interested in the midfielder.
Chadli has only started one game since Tim Sherwood was appointed in place of Andre Villas Boas and record signing Lamela who came to Spurs for £30m is yet to settle, although the club are refusing to loan him to either Inter Milan or Atletico Madrid.
Holtby's agent, Marcus Noack said of the 23-year-old: "Lewis is desperate to play, which is why we are looking extensively for solutions. Schalke is an interesting option."

Nemanja Matic has completed his move to Chelsea from Benfica just three years after being shipped out by the club in a deal worth £21m.
Today has also seen the signing of Stefan Johansen from Stromsgodset to Celtic and Jeffrey Monakana from Preston to Brighton while Fulham's Bryan Ruiz is off on loan to PSV Eindhoven.
