Their on/off relationship has sent the rumour mill into overdrive in recent months, but it looks like Justin Bieber may have hatched his plot to sleep with Selena Gomez two years before they started dating.

In footage obtained by celebrity site TMZ.com, the then 15-year-old teen heartthrob confesses to having a celebrity crush on Gomez - who was dating Joe Jonas at the time.

Bieber appeared to hint at his scheme to woo Gomez during an interview with L.A. radio host DJ Skee back in 2009 when he admitted to having a soft spot for the former Disney star.

In the 90-second clip, a pubescent Bieber discusses his greatest musical influences and also showcases his skills.

When asked which fellow musician he fancies, the young Bieber says: "I have a crush on Selena Gomez."

He quickly blushes and can be heard telling the host: "Nobody heard that."

Despite his obvious embarrassment, his plans appeared to work and he attended a Vanity Fair Oscar party with Gomez almost two years later.

In May, Gomez revealed that she had turned to music to cope with her relationship woes and had been writing songs about Bieber.

"That's the most personal track on the record, for sure," she said.

"I think it's a sweet way of releasing it. It's not an aggressive approach to what people are probably expecting. I'm sure he'll love it too."
