Kate Moss turns 40 on January 16. She was discovered at the age of 14 by Sarah Doukas, the founder of Storm Model Management, New York.
Her waif-like looks ushered in the era of "heroin chic", setting new standards within the industry in contrast to the more curvaceous "supermodels" of the moment such as Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell.
She has featured in major campaigns for many of the industry's top brands, including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein. She has appeared on the cover of British Vogue a record 30 times.
As Kate Moss reaches her 40th birthday, IB Times UK takes a look back at her glamorous career and often tumultous personal life.
Kate Moss was discovered by Storm Model Management when she was just 14 years old. Her career took off two years later when she was shot by Corinne Day for The Face, and she became seen as an 'anti-supermodel'. Her 1993 Calvin Klein campaign ushered in the controversial 'heroin chic' look, prompting rumours about her weight and health. She laughed off the speculation: "What can you say? How many times can you say 'I'm not anorexic'?"
