Kyrie Irving to Miami? NBA Trade Rumours Grow as Mavericks Face Uncomfortable Cooper Flagg Decision

Kyrie Irving's future with the Dallas Mavericks is attracting renewed attention despite the franchise resisting trade interest, with rival teams reportedly questioning whether that stance will hold as the NBA trade deadline approaches.

The uncertainty comes as Dallas builds around 19-year-old Cooper Flagg, while the 34-year-old Irving sits at the opposite end of the team's timeline, potentially opening the door for clubs such as the Miami Heat if the Mavericks reconsider their position.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks have consistently rejected approaches for Irving during the off-season, giving no indication that they are actively trying to move the nine-time All-Star.

However, Stein said rival teams remain unconvinced that Dallas will maintain that position throughout the season.

'Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches,' Stein wrote.

Irving's contract adds another consideration. The guard has a $42.4 million (£31.2 million) player option for the 2027-28 season, while his age could increasingly become a factor in how Dallas structures its roster for the future.

Cooper Flagg Puts Mavericks' Timeline in Focus

At the centre of the speculation is the significant age gap between Irving and Flagg, who is expected to be a cornerstone of the Mavericks' next era.

Irving will turn 35 in March, while Flagg is 19, creating an unusual timeline for two of the most important players on the Dallas roster.

Stein identified that difference as a key reason other NBA teams continue to monitor Irving's availability.

'The primary factor fueling that curiosity, of course, is that fact that Irving is 34 and Mavericks star forward Cooper Flagg is 19,' Stein wrote.

That does not mean a Kyrie Irving trade is inevitable. Dallas has reportedly resisted trade interest so far, and there is no indication that the Mavericks have formally made him available.

Could Kyrie Irving to Miami Heat Work?

The Miami Heat could emerge as a potential suitor if Dallas eventually changes its position, although there is currently no reported negotiation between the two franchises.

One hypothetical trade framework would send Irving and Sergio De Larrea to Miami in exchange for Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell.

Such a proposal remains a mock trade rather than a reported offer. Wiggins' contract could provide a significant salary-matching component if the Heat attempted to construct a deal, while Mitchell would give Dallas a younger guard who could potentially fit more closely with the franchise's developing core.

However, this hypothetical package should not be presented as an actual proposal between the teams.

De Larrea is also a particularly speculative inclusion: Dallas acquired the draft rights to the 2026 25th overall pick from the Los Angeles Lakers in June.

Why Kyrie Irving Could Interest the Miami Heat

Irving would give Miami another established scorer capable of creating shots off the dribble, stretching defences and generating offence in late-game situations.

His skill set could also provide another dimension alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, particularly in pick-and-roll and two-man actions where Irving's shooting could force defenders away from the basket.

The Heat also have shooters, including Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Simone Fontecchio, potentially giving Irving additional spacing around him. Thompson joined Miami after his Dallas buyout, while Hardaway and Fontecchio were also added or retained during the off-season.

Any Miami move, however, would depend first on Dallas becoming willing to discuss a trade.

Mavericks Face Decision Before NBA Trade Deadline

For now, the Mavericks' position remains unchanged. According to Stein, Dallas has repeatedly turned away trade interest in Irving, leaving rival teams to watch whether circumstances shift before the 11 February 2027 deadline.

Irving has faced mid-season uncertainty before. He requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets in February 2023 and was subsequently dealt to Dallas before later signing a new contract with the Mavericks.

There is no evidence that Irving has made a similar request this time, but the combination of his age, contract and Dallas' increasingly youthful roster ensures his future will remain one of the NBA trade rumours to watch.
