Lake District death: Helvellyn claims second victim in a week as man falls 300m down mountain
A man has died after falling 300m down Mount Helvellyn in the Lake District.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called at 4pm on Saturday (17 January) following reports that two men had fallen from Swirral Edge into Brown Cove.
The men, from Widnes, Cheshire, were descending the peak when one of them slipped. The second man then lost his footing as he attempted to help his friend.
The pair were taken to hospital, where one of them died overnight from his injuries.
A third member of the party was assisted off the hill by a passing walker and taken to the mountain rescue's base.
A total of 45 rescue personnel were involved in the latest incident, which lasted seven hours.
The climber's death is the second in a week at the beauty spot after the body of a man from London was discovered after he had set off to climb the mountain.
