Life Ball 2013 Vienna: Sir Elton John and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Magenta Carpet for Cavalli Fashion Show [PHOTOS]
The Life Ball 2013 was the place to be for stars from all across the world, right after the Cannes Film Festival 2013 concluded over the weekend. Regarded as one of the largest charity events on the continent, the Life Ball in the Austrian capital of Vienna was celebrated on 25 May, amidst much fanfare.
Co-founded in 1992 by Gery Keszler, the Life Ball provides fund raising opportunities for research into HIV and also acts to promote issues relating to and the spread of HIV and AIDS. The A-list of celebrities who are normally regular attendees include British musician Sir Elton John, Hollywood star Sharon Stone, supermodels Heidi Klum and Naomi Campbell and burlesque star Dita von Teese.
The Life Ball 2013 was no different, with former US president Bill Clinton, Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Hilary Swank, former Miss World and Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, former actress Barbara Eden (she of I Dream Of Jeanie fame from the 60s) and the heavily pregnant Fergie, who is expecting her first child with Transformers star Josh Duhamel, in attendance.
According to a note on the event's official Web site, the annual Life Ball is divided into two sections - the Ball itself and, before that, a Magenta Carpet opening and a high-profile fashion show; this year the show was by Italian design house Roberto Cavalli. The organisers explained that Cavalli, who apart from stunning fashion onlookers at Cannes, was in vogue at the 2013 amfAR Cinema Against Aids gala, and would present a special charity limited edition to benefit Life Ball.
The Life Ball 2013 was themed around the folktales of 1001 Arabian Nights.
In a note, the organisers explained: "Everyone knows her, courageous Scheherazade, bravely fighting for her life during 1001 nights. Her adventurous and fairy-tale like stories attract the king's curiosity night after night, and her inexhaustible fantasy eventually saves her life... using fantasy to help people infected with HIV or suffering from AIDS. Using an old Arabic saying, Life Ball 2013 follows the motto: "It takes the night to see the stars"- for a future without HIV and AIDS."
I Dream Of Jeanie
Given the year's theme then, the appearance, in costume, of Barbara Eden was expected. The iconic star of the popular 60s and 70s sitcom I Dream of Jeanie, now 78 years old, Eden wore her trademark iconic pink cropped-top and harem pants, completing the look with her hair braided in a blonde ponytail and wearing silver heels. Her new "master" was former US president Clinton, who then escorted her off-stage.
American pop singer Adam Lambert provided musical entertainment, in an exotic Ali Baba-inspired look, complete with a jewelled turban and 40 shirtless dancing thieves.
