Liverpool loan report: Sergi Canos extends Brentford stay until end of 2015-16 season
Liverpool starlet Sergi Canos has extended his loan deal at Brentford until the end of the 2015-16 season, the Premier League side have confirmed.
Canos, 18, initially joined the Championship side on a five-month loan deal in the summer and has made 17 appearances for the Bees to date. While he was one of a clutch of Liverpool youngsters to briefly return to Merseyside following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, the club have allowed the former Barcelona youth to finish the season with Dean Smith's outfit.
"I have been really pleased with Sergi and he has been progressing really well," Smith said. "Even though he is only 18 years old, he has quite an old head on young shoulders.
"He has impressed me so far. He wants to learn and he wants to get better. He is enjoying himself here and he gives us something that we haven't really got here in terms of his direct running and enthusiasm.
"It is encouraging to have a player like Sergi here for the rest of the season."
Canos celebrated extending his loan deal with a sensational solo effort in the 2-1 win over Reading on 28 December. Receiving the ball out on the right wing, he clipped the ball over two opposition defenders before lashing a vicious effort home from just inside the penalty area.
The teenager, who has followed in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin in leaving Barcelona's La Masia academy for the Premier League, featured in a friendly match for Liverpool against Wolverhampton Wanderers during his brief return in November and was encouraged by Klopp's passion for every game he faces.
"Klopp is a special manager. He's passionate. When we were playing the friendly game, it was like a Champions League game for him," he said to Sky Sports. "For me, that matters, the importance he gives every match. Even if it's a friendly or a Champions League game, he treats it the same."
