Liverpool: Reds call off plans to sign Piotr Zielinski, Joel Matip and Ben Chilwell in January
Liverpool have shelved their plans to sign three January targets and will return with moves for the trio in the summer. The Reds have made two signings so far in the ongoing winter transfer window with Steven Caulker joining on loan from Queens Park Rangers and Marko Grujic from Red Star Belgrade in Serbia. The latter has returned to his former club on loan for the rest of the season.
According to the Daily Mail, the Merseyside club were plotting January moves for Piotr Zielinski, Joel Matip and Ben Chilwell from Udinese, Schalke and Leicester City respectively, but have now put their plans on hold until the summer. Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen his team following their struggles to maintain pace with the top four clubs in the Premier League. They are currently placed ninth, eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
The Polish youngster, who is on loan at Empoli from Udinese, has scored two goals and provided five assists in 20 appearances this season. He is a versatile player, who can play all across the midfield and as a secondary striker. The German manager was keen on bringing him to Anfield this month, but has now shelved his plans until the summer.
Similarly, the manager was keen on defensive duo Matip and Chilwell, but is unlikely to land them this month. The former was linked with a free transfer at the end of the season, while the latter is a target for a number of clubs following some impressive performances for the surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City.
Chilwell, however, is a priority target for Arsenal, according to the Sun, and the Gunners are said to be plotting a second bid worth around £4m ($5.7m) to lure the young defender to the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool could lose out as the report claims that the north Londoners are keen on completing the signing this month.
