Liverpool rekindle interest in signing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to replace Simon Mignolet as No 1 at Anfield
Liverpool are considering a move in signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, according to the Mirror.
The 22-year-old joined the Catalan club from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer and was tipped to replace Victor Valdes at Nou Camp. The Spain international left the La Liga giants on a free transfer and has now joined Manchester United.
Barcelona also added Chile's World Cup star Claudio Bravo, who has been the first choice keeper for manager Luis Enrique. His arrival has seen Ter Stegen drop down the pecking order and he is yet to make his debut in La Liga.
Brendan Rodgers has long been an admirer of the German international and Liverpool were keen on securing his services while he was at Monchengladbach. However, Ter Stegen snubbed a chance to join the Merseyside club and signed for Barcelona.
The Reds have Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones as the two recognised keepers in the squad. The Belgium international has received a lot of criticism for his poor display, which has forced Liverpool to look elsewhere in the transfer market.
Rodgers wants to rekindle his side's interest in signing Ter Stegen and acquire his services to make him the first choice keeper at Anfield. A move to Liverpool will help him feature regularly and also help the Reds improve defensively.
Ter Stegen has expressed his unhappiness over lack of playing time at Barcelona. However, the German keeper has vowed to fight at the Catalan club in order to be the No 1 at Nou Camp.
"It's good to be at Barca but the situation is difficult. I'd be lying if I said I didn't care and it isn't easy being a spectator," Ter Stegen told German daily Bild.
"I want to be the No.1 and I'm convinced that's something that will happen if I continue to improve and work hard."
"I can only try to prove that I am the best [of the two goalkeepers] and that's why I came here, so it's something I will fight for," he added.
