Liverpool Youngsters Handed Chance to Shine in Europe
Summer signing Oussama Assaidi could make his debut for Liverpool, while fellow new recruit Samed Yesil is also likely to feature
Brendan Rodgers will hand opportunities to numerous young players when Liverpool travel to Switzerland for their Europa League Group A game against Young Boys tomorrow night.
The Liverpool Echo has revealed that a host of big names have remained on Merseyside with Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen, Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson all rested for the weekend's game against Manchester United.
Under pressure goalkeeper Pepe Reina will also miss the game and will have to wait to equal the record of 80 appearances in Europe by a Liverpool player, which is currently held by Ray Clemence.
With the Spanish keeper remaining at Melwood, it seems there will be a first start of the season for Brad Jones, while young Hungarian stopper Peter Gulacsi is likely to be on the bench.
With so many first team players missing the game, there will be an opportunity for a number of young players to impress. Raheem Sterling has already been promoted to the senior squad and numerous others will be looking to do the same.
Rodgers revealed that German teenage Samed Yesil would travel to Switzerland, while there was also room in the squad for Suso, Andre Wisdom, Conor Coady, Adam Morgan, Jon Flanagan, Jack Robinson and Dani Pacheco.
There could also be a debut handed to summer signing Oussama Assaidi who was signed from Heerenveen for £3million and has overcome a slight injury to return to full fitness.
Nuri Sahin is expected to make his second start for Liverpool, while there will be some experienced players in the side with Jamie Carragher. Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson all expected to feature.
Liverpool fielded a strong side against Hearts in order to qualify for the competition, but with Manchester United visiting Anfield on Sunday, it seems Rodgers has prioritised the Premier League game.
