Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea: Willian's late goal hands Conte's side a point after Salah gave Reds the lead
Jurgen Klopp's side thought they had won the hard-fought clash at Anfield before Willian's intervention.
Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
- Liverpool and Chelsea had to make do with a point after playing out a hard-fought match at Anfield.
- Mohamed Salah opened the scoring with a fine finish before Willian's chip levelled the score
- Liverpool: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Moreno, Henderson, Milner, Coutinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Sturridge.
- Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Cahill (c); Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Kante, Bakayoko, Alonso; Hazard, Morata.
Full-time: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
A entertaining, well-fought match ends in a draw thanks to a late goal from Willian, after Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool the lead in the second half.
Klopp's decision to rest Mane and Firmino did not seem to completely backfire, though they certainly did not do enough to win, with Antonio Conte's men certainly well worth a draw.
Calls for a penalty for Liverpool as Sturridge's cross hits Cahill on the arm, but there was no chance referee was ever going to award a spot-kick for that.
Liverpool have started the second half superior, but Firmino and Mane may be needed to provide that cutting edge.
A hopeful ball for Oxlade-Chamberlain is read well by Courtois, who did well to control the ball without using his hands on the edge of the area.
Half-time: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea
A well-fought half ends goalless despite decent chances for both teams. Salah has gone close for the Reds, while Drinkwater has spurned a couple of opportunities for the visitors. Hazard has been phenomenal, and his second half performance could determine where the points fall at the end of the game.
Salah has his first chance to run at the Chelsea backline after receiving the ball from Sturridge, but his shot is easily blocked and eventually cleared.
Liverpool recycle the ball but Chelsea pounce and break, with Hazard flying through the Reds' half and almost finding Morata. The ball is cleared for throw, and Chelsea eventually win a corner.
Some pre-match thoughts from Antonio Conte:
On formation: "I think this season we are trying a different solution to have more balance because we conceded many goals and we're trying to find solutions [to that], tonight we change something."
On opting for Drinkwater over Fabregas: "I think it's normal rotation and we need rotation. Fabregas has played every game this season and I think this choice is right, I hope."
Less than 20 minutes until kick-off, A reminder of today's teams:
Liverpool: Mignolet, Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Moreno, Henderson, Milner, Coutinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Sturridge.
Chelsea: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Cahill (c); Zappacosta, Drinkwater, Kante, Bakayoko, Alonso; Hazard, Morata.
Thibaut Courtois starts for Chelsea today amid reports of a lack of progress in contract negotiations between him and the club.
Antonio Conte is in no doubt of the Belgian's pedigree, and is keen to see him signed up to a new long-term deal before long.
"I like to give my opinion about technical decisions. It is important for the club to face this issue, to face this contract with Courtois," Conte said ahead of Chelsea's clash against Liverpool, as quoted by the Guardian. "I think that Thibaut didn't need my opinion. He knows very well what my thoughts about him are."
"For sure I can tell that Courtois is one of the best, maybe the best goalkeeper in the world, and he is a player who is very important for Chelsea. I can tell this. But for sure the renewal is a task for the club.
"If a big player decides to not sign a new contract it is difficult for a club to try to avoid this issue," Conte explained.
So Daniel Sturridge leads the line for Liverpool amid uncertainty over his future. The 28-year-old has been a fringe player under Jurgen Klopp, who dismissed suggestions surrounding the Englishman's potential exit and stated his desire to keep Emre Can.
"There's nothing to say here about it [Sturridge's future]," he said, according to Sky Sports. "You can't expect an answer. It's normal he wants to play more."
"[Can] could still sign a contract in May. We want to keep him. We have to be as attractive as possible as a club."
Baffled by the Liverpool team news? Klopp tries to explain:
"Dejan Lovren is not able to play, he's a little bit injured, like Emre, so that's the reason for that change," Klopp told BT Sport.
"We need to use the quality of the squad. I have absolute trust in the squad but then I have to show it. We cannot let the other boys play until they can't play anymore, I said it before, so that's why we change.
"We have fresh legs in, still quality with fantastic options to change in the game - so, good."
"I would say Ox would play similar to how Sadio plays with his own specific skills of course involved," he added.
"Milly is just experience and desire, a really good footballer and is really important for us to protect and defend situations."
Firmino and Mane are benched, but Salah starts for Liverpool.
Conte is all too aware of his talents, but knows Chelsea can't place all their attention on the Egyptian.
"I know him very well, because he played in Italy for many years. Salah is a good player and is very dangerous. He's a technical player, but at the same time is very fast, very strong, very good in 1v1," Conte said.
"Also he's very good to finish. We must pay great attention, but not only to Salah, also to [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, [Daniel] Sturridge... Liverpool have great potential as a team."
Alvaro Morata looks set to return to the Chelsea starting line-up for Saturday's (25 November) high-profile Premier League meeting with Liverpool.
Asked if he would be restored to the first XI against Liverpool at Anfield, Antonio Conte told reporters: "We have to make the best decision game-by-game, to find the best solutions for the team and to give the right rest to my players.
"Last time [in September], Morata played three games in a row [against Stoke City and Atletico Madrid] and, after 20 minutes against Manchester City, he was injured. I have to pay attention in all situations. Sometimes I take a risk but it's my job and I like to do this."
For Liverpool, Joel Matip missed the draw in Sevilla but is set to return after a thigh problem. However, Can is a doubt despite playing the final 27 minutes of the Champions League game in midweek after replacing Philippe Coutinho.
Adam Lallana will be bidding to make his first appearance of the season after returning from a hamstring injury, while goalkeepers Danny Ward and Adam Bogdan, as well as defender Nathaniel Clyne, are longer-term absentees.
"Joel Matip trained with the team on Thursday [23 November]," Klopp said. "But Emre Can, he is struggling a little bit. He's a doubt."
Chelsea will be available to call upon Victor Moses for the first time in six weeks.
The Nigerian international limped off with a hamstring injury after just 39 minutes of a shock 2-1 defeat away to former club Crystal Palace on 14 October and has since missed eight matches across all competitions - during which time summer signing Davide Zappacosta has mostly deputised at right wing-back after the versatile Cesar Azpilicueta was moved back into defence.
"His condition is good and for sure he needs a bit of time to recover the best form," Conte told reporters during his pre-match press conference at Cobham on Friday, per football.london.
"Tomorrow he is in our squad and I want to bring him on the bench and decide if there is the necessity to have him on or not. I am very happy as now he is fine, but needs a bit of time to have the best physical condition."
Good afternoon and welcome to IB Times UK's live coverage of Liverpool vs Chelsea.
The Premier League champions have put a good run of form together since being embarrassed by Roma in the Champions League. Antonio Conte's have done well to quash suggestions of a crisis, but they will find it extremely difficult to keep their momentum at Anfield, where Liverpool have been rather imperious so far this season.
Jurgen Klopp's side boast a near-perfect record at home this season, and they will no doubt want to get back to winning ways against Chelsea after collapsing against Sevilla in midweek.
