Real Madrid star Luka Modric has added insult to injury after he claimed that the European Champions went easy on Liverpool in the second half of their Champions League fixture on Wednesday as they had one eye on the El Clasico.

The Spanish capital club dismantled the Reds with a clinical first-half performance and went into the break 3-0 ahead, but they were unable to add to that and the game ended on the same score line. This has led the former Tottenham star to claim that Real took it easy in the second half as they faced Barcelona in the El Clasico on Saturday.

Modric feels that the first goal, which was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, broke Liverpool and that helped them take it easy in the second half.

"In the last month, or month and a half, we have looked in great shape and we showed our top form in this iconic stadium," Modric said, as quoted by Goal.

"The first goal is broke them. They lost enthusiasm. Then in the second half we were saving a little bit of energy for Saturday," the Croatian international added.

The 29-year-old midfielder has credited the great atmosphere in the team for their recent run of good form and is hoping that Real come out as victors in their crucial clash against bitter rivals Barcelona. He believes that a victory will provide a major boost to the team.

"The atmosphere in the team is great and it's one of the reasons why we're playing so well," the former Tottenham star explained.

"I am ready for the Clasico, whatever the outcome is. Hopefully, we will win because it would mean a lot for our confidence, " Modric added.
