A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder after a pregnant woman was stabbed in a primary school in Liverpool.

The 28-year-old woman was taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition. Tests are currently being carried out on her unborn child.

Merseyside Police said the man, from Anfield, was arrested following the incident at Lister Primary School on Green Lane, Stoneycroft.

A 39-year-old woman from the area was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the incident. She remains in custody and both suspects will be questioned.

The attack took place yesterday afternoon, on a walkway within the school grounds. It is believed no children witnessed the incident.

Police were called to Green Lane after reports that a woman had been stabbed, and found the victim had suffered multiple wounds.

Detective inspector Martin Earl said: "This was a despicable attack on a vulnerable lady, who has been taken to hospital for treatment.

"This must have been very distressing for anyone who saw it and I would like to reassure residents that this type of incident is isolated and was not related to the nearby school. However, there may have been parents in the area who are able to assist our investigation.

"At this time we believe that the offender was known to the victim and we have officers out on the ground, working to trace the person responsible.

"I would urge anyone who has any information to get in contact."
