Mancini Chases Brazilian and Serbian Defenders - Report
Mancini desperate to sign new players before end of transfer period
The summer transfer window is fast coming to an end and champions Manchester City are still looking to make some last minute purchases. One of these could be Brazilian right back Maicon, from Inter Milan.
The Italians are asking for a fee in the region of £5.5m for the 31 year old defender, who was once regarded as the best attacking full back in the world and was even linked with a move to Spanish champions Real Madrid. Indeed, the interest from City aside, Jose Mourinho's team are still considered a possible destination. However, given the Spanish club has also been linked to former Newcastle United target - Mathieu Debuchy - the path to Maicon may be clear for City, who would like to spend no more than £4m for Maicon, given his age and the fact he has demanded (and reportedly been given) a package of £100,000 per week.
Maicon has worked with City manager Roberto Mancini before, when the latter was in charge of Inter Milan, and the coach is a known admirer of the Brazilian. In addition, the long-term injury to right back Micah Richards means there is definitely an open position for Maicon at the Etihad.
However, the player's agent, Roberto Calenda, has also cautioned parties his client could remain in Milan if talks do no progress. He also ruled out moves to rival Italian clubs.
"There is interest from Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea in the player. There is no possibility that he goes to Milan or Juventus. He has worn the Nerazzurri shirt for six seasons and has too much respect for the fans to betray them in that manner. He could also yet remain at Inter," the Guardian quoted Calenda as saying.
City Close to Fiorentina's Nastasic
City have had an unseasonably, relative to recent years, transfer season, only signing Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell. It could all change in the last few hours though, with reports Mancini's side are close to signing teenage Italian defender Matija Nastasic from Fiorentina.
It seems Mancini has had his eye on the 19 year old Serbian for some time now and has been impressed after the defender enjoyed a good season last year. The champions have reportedly bid £9m plus the services of Montenegrin defender Stefan Savic. The Viola, however, want an additional £5m in add-ons.
Finally, City are reported to be close to announcing a deal with Swansea City for winger Scott Sinclair, after the Daily Mail reported terms with club and player had been agreed. Swansea will receive £6.2m, which, with bonuses, will rise to £8m. Elsewhere, Spanish side Malaga are reportedly considering a bid for unwanted City striker Roque Santa Cruz.
