A man was killed outside his Manchester home in attempts to stop car thieves escaping with his Audi S3, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

Michael Samwell was found with "serious injuries" at around 3am on Sunday (23 April) after he and his wife were woken up by a loud bang, forcing the 35-year-old to rush downstairs to approach the bandits.

The suspects are then alleged to have driven into Samwell with his own car before driving off with it. Later on, the Audi had been left abandoned on Whitby Avenue, Ladybarn, with severe damage.

Samwell was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Greater Manchester Police was called to the address on Cranbourne Road in Chorlton after the man's body was discovered.

Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick announced the start of a murder investigation and has asked for any potential witnesses to come forward.

"This is the murder of an innocent man who has merely sought to protect his property from criminals," Chadwick said.

"We will not stop until we have found the person responsible for this dreadful crime.

"My thoughts go out to Michael's wife and his family. I cannot comprehend what they must be going through. We have now launched a murder investigation and are searching for those responsible.

"I appeal for anyone with any knowledge of what happened to come forward. I would particularly like to hear from people who were anywhere near Cranbourne Road at around 3am last night or have seen Michael's car being driven erratically or abandoned shortly afterwards."

It is believed Samwell was a former naval officer. He is survived by his wife, Jessica.
