Manchester United and Liverpool Prepare £8m Bid for Barcelona Midfielder Alex Song - Report
Manchester United and Liverpool are considering a move in signing Arsenal target Alex Song in the summer, according to the Mirror.
The Barcelona midfielder has been on the Gunners's radar as Arsene Wenger was keen on re-signing his former player. The 26-year-old left the Emirates and completed his switch to Camp Nou in 2012.
However, the Cameroon international has failed to cement a place in the Catalan club's starting XI and has seen his playing time being restricted. He has made 18 league appearances this season, which include only 12 starts.
The report claims United and Liverpool are set for a summer battle in acquiring the services of Song. Barcelona value him at around £8m and are willing to part ways with their midfielder in the next transfer window.
United have had a poor run in all competitions this campaign and are already out of next season's Champions League. The Old Trafford club would be looking to invest heavily in order to return to Europe's elite club competition.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have already qualified for the group stages of the Champions League. The Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted the Merseyside club will be looking to bring in five to six players in the summer.
The Cameroon midfielder is considering his future and earlier claimed that he would evaluate the situation at the end of the season. He has opened the door to return to the Premier League after he revealed that he wants to return to England in the future.
"I will return to England, that's for certain. Right now, I'm not thinking about it. If I have to leave Barcelona one day, it will be for a transfer to England," Song explained.
"At the end of the season, I need to take stock and see what I'm going to do for my future," the former Arsenal midfielder stressed.
United and Liverpool could face tough competition in acquiring Song's services in the coming transfer window. Earlier Mirror reports suggested that Wenger was also eyeing a move to bring his former midfielder to north London in the summer after being made aware that Song wants to return to England.
