Manchester United transfer news: Standard Liege star Mathieu Dossevi questions loan arrival of Victor Valdes
Standard Liege star Mathieu Dossevi has questioned the loan arrival of Victor Valdes from Manchester United after claiming that the Belgium side didn't need a new goalkeeper. The Togolose international doesn't doubt the level of the Barcelona legend but believes Lieges's current number one Guillaume Hubert should remain as the first-choice for manager Yannick Ferrera.
Manchester United confirmed their arguably first major departure of the January transfer window after revealing they have reached a deal with Standard Liege for the veteran keeper to play on loan at the Belgium side for the remainder of the campaign. Valdes announced on Thursday 21 January that he would be leaving Old Trafford just one year after he joined the club in a 18-month deal.
The 34-year-old keeper put an end to his nightmare spell in the Premier League to secure some playing time at the Belgium side, having been frozen out by Louis van Gaal since the summer following his allegedly refusal to play with the U21 side. He played just two matches for United, both of them last season.
But it looks that the keeper will face new scrutiny in his new club too after his new team-mate Dossevi had suggested that the Spaniard was not wanted at the Belgian side either.
"Of course, Valdes is a great player. But I seriously wonder if we actually need him – and I don't think so," Dossevi said to The Mirror. "We have a great goalkeeper in Guillaume Hubert. He is a fantastic keeper. Guillaume has been showing brilliant things in goal for our club and the players are all right behind him."
The former Spanish international won six La Liga titles, three Champions League crowns and two Copa del Reys, during his 12 years at the Camp Nou but Dossevi believes Guillaume Hubert should remain as the Belgium team's number one ahead of his new team-mate.
"I think that is normal. Only thanks to Guillaume we have the chance to qualify for the Belgium Cup final. So why on earth would we want to replace him?"
