Manchester United 5-1 FC Midtjylland: Uefa Europa League last 32 as it happened
Midtjylland are taking their sweet time with their free-kicks and have another one when Blind fouls Onuachu. The ball is swung in menacingly but Romero rises to punch clear. The Argentine has had another solid evening so far tonight; not many shots to save but he has been decisive and commanding when coming out to clear the ball.
More brilliance from Memphis as he backheels the ball into the path of Herrera who is clearly tripped as he races into the box. It's a clear penalty, and still on those duties, Mata steps up to take. It side foots towards the left hand corner but Andersen reads it and springs across to make a vital save!
Memphis is having a cracking game. Just inside the left of the box, he weaves past his man and scoops another cross into the six yard area that just evades Mata. The Dutchman is growing in confidence all the time, if United do manage to come out on top tonight - and it's a very big if given they are still behind on aggregate - you feel it will be down to him.
Remember Sisto causing United problems with his direct running and pace a week ago? Now it's Daley Blind and Michael Carrick tasked with dealing with that. While Midtjylland are likely to sit back tonight, you feel United's defensive partnership will need plenty of protection from Morgan Scheiderlin if they are to get through the night unscathed.
A couple of interesting selection changes from Louis van Gaal, who is trying to contend with an obscene amount of injuries. Michael Carrick is preferred to Paddy McNair at centre-half while 18-year-old Joe Riley replaces Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
Andreas Pereira can't seem to find a way into this team no matter what he does. Despite his bright cameo, he remains on the bench, alongside the returning Marcos Rojo.
BREAKING: Joe Riley starts at left-back for United this evening but Chris Smalling misses out. Michael Carrick drops in at centre-half to replace him.
Manchester United team to face Midtjylland: S.Romero; Varela, Carrick, Blind, Riley; Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera; Lingard, Mata, Memphis; Martial.
Subs: Subs: Joel Pereira, Rojo, Poole, McNair, Love, Andreas Pereira, Rashford
It's bizarre to think Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, a 19-year-old who made his senior debut in November last year, has been United's most seasoned full-back option in recent weeks. With Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Matteo Darmian all sidelined, the likes of Guillermo Varela, Donald Love and most recently Joe Riley have all made their debuts.
Here is the Manchester United squad that trained on Wednesday.
Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero, Joel Castro Pereira.
Defenders: Donald Love, Joe Riley, Marcos Rojo, Guillermo Varela, Daley Blind, Regan Poole, Paddy McNair
Midfielders: Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Jesse Lingard, Adnan Januzaj, Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata.
Forwards: Marcus Rashford, Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial.
TEAM NEWS: United's injury woes have lumbered from bad to worse in recent weeks. David de Gea is still not available after suffering that knee injury in the warm-up ahead of the first leg. Chris Smalling faces a late fitness test after crashing into an advertising board in the win over Shrewsbury Town, while Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is another doubt.
Louis van Gaal told reporters this week Marcos Rojo will be included in the squad tonight while Antonio Valencia is also nearing his return. It's still pretty bleak out there, however, with Will Keane, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney all still out. Adnan Januzaj meanwhile is ineligible.
Lille 2005. Basel 2011. Olympiakos 2014. FC Midtjylland 2016. Last Thursday's defeat in Denmark was right up there with Manchester United's worst European performances in recent memory. Louis van Gaal's side wilted and, in the end, stopped caring against an opponent who were considered easy pickings when their name came out of the hat last December. A staggeringly bad performance saw the Premier League giants brushed aside with consummate ease in that 2-1 defeat, a result that highlighted the glaring concerns running through this team more harshly than ever.
Only Sergio Romero, the man called into replace David de Gea minutes from kick-off, left Denmark with a positive note to his name. United urgently need to rectify that tonight.
Van Gaal has already indicated United's best hope of qualifying for next season's Champions League now rely on them winning the Europa League. United don't even look favourites to win this tie at the moment, let alone good enough to reach May's final. But in front of an Old Trafford crowd tonight, they are more than capable of rescuing their European campaign. But anything close to resembling the show we saw a week ago will rightfully see them given the boot.
