Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City: Juan Mata winner books place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals
City failed to register a single shot on target during disappointing evening.
- Second-half strike from Juan Mata sees United progress into the next round.
- Pep Guardiola's Manchester City now without a win in their last six games in all competitions.
- United get some payback after defeat in first derby of the season in September.
United continue to press City in the dying minutes with Pogba sliding across in an attempt to snatch a pass out from the back meant for Otamendi. The Frenchman catches the Argentine and earns himself a booking. Ibrahimovic makes a nuisance of himself, blocking City's attempts to take the free kick quickly and earns himself a yellow too.
City patiently probe before Garcia swings a wicked ball in for Aguero. The Argentine can't stretch himself far enough to reach it and Sterling, who picks it up out on the flank, loses possession immediately. United react swiftly, working the ball to Ibrahimovic who holds it up brilliantly before freeing Rashford down the right flank. He drives a cross in for Pogba the ball is cut out in a nick of time.
United have the lead! They have started this half with much more aggression and determination and it's paid off eight minutes into the half. Ibrahimovic does brilliantly, holding off Otamendi as a high ball comes in and getting into space into the box. He forces the ball across the box to Herrera who holds off a challenge from Kolarov, letting it run across his body for Mata who drives one home into the bottom corner.
Pogba denied by the post! It's the best move of the game from United with Mata working the ball in from the right to Ibrahimovic. His first touch is superb, knocking it past Otamendi, who sold himself, and ushers it onto Pogba to his left. He drives in and fires for the near post, but the City goalkeeper gets just enough on it to push it onto the post.
Ibrahimovic loses the ball and City quickly pounce through the middle. Sane is on the ball and has Nolito breaking clear down the left and Iheanacho through the middle but the Germany international pings it out of the reach of both of them and out of play. This has been dreadful at times from both sides.
United make a complete mess of it however with Valencia losing the ball and again City look to Navas down the right flank to lead the counter. It's their turn now though for their attacking to break down into nothing, with De Gea trotting out easily to claim the ball. Hasn't been a classic, this one.
Ander Herrera loses possession in the middle of the park and City again move the ball to Navas who springs forward down the right. He looks inside for Garcia who waits for the overlapping run from Clichy on the opposite flank, but Mata makes a great challenge having raced back across the length of the pitch to win the ball back.
We got the midfield right in our starting XI prediction but that's about as good as it got. Poor form.
So what is exactly going on with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, then? The Armenia international was hauled off after half-time in the league meeting between these two sides and hasn't been seen since. Having suffered a thigh problem, United made a request to the Armenian FA for the attacking midfielder to remain in Manchester during the international break to continue his recovery. That request was accepted, but still he is nowhere to be seen.
Ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho told reporters of his summer signing: "He has to work more to get the intensity and the real fitness to play at the high level."
So are we to expect Mkhitaryan simply isn't ready for the demands of English football? It would appear that way...
The benches
Jose Mourinho's options include Ashley Young, who provided a stellar performances in the stalemate against Liverpool and Memphis Depay, still to score his first goal under Mourinho.
Manchester United subs: Romero, Darmian, Fellaini, Schneiderlin, Memphis, Young, Depay
City's bench is also a very strong one with the exceptions of 19-year-old Tosin Adarabioyo and goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Manchester City subs: Gunn, Gundogan, Sterling, Aguero, Adarabioyo, Fernandinho, Kolarov
Pep Guardiola makes nine changes in with Leroy Sane and Vincent Kompany the only players to retain their place in the starting XI that drew with Southampton.
Pablo Maffeo comes in at right-back with both Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna ruled out with Aleix Garcia also coming into attack after his superb display in the third round with over Swansea City.
Kelechi Iheanacho leads the City attack with Sergio Aguero on the bench with support from Nolito and Jesus Navas.
Chris Smalling is left out completely this afternoon after his horror-show against Chelsea. Henrikh Mkhitaryan's curious absence continues; he's also left out of the squad along with the United skipper Wayne Rooney.
With Phil Jones also still unavailable, Marcos Rojo comes in at centre-half to partner Daley Blind with Luke Shaw regaining his spot at left-back. With Marouane Fellaini an injury victim from that defeat at Chelsea, Michael Carrick comes in for just his third start of the season although the Belgian is on the bench. And as pre-match reports suggested, Anthony Martial misses out with Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford supporting Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.
Pep Guardiola told the media earlier this week he would be making changes for tonight's fixture. Could that mean a return for the likes of City youngsters Angelino, Aleix Garcia and Brahim Diaz? The trio all featured in the club's third round victory over Swansea City in September.
But with his side now without a win in their last five games, Guardiola has avoided bringing them back in with his side struggling for form. But he has suggested that may change tonight.
We are going to rotate. Some are going to play. I need to see the players today in training and after we will decide the team. We didn't win in five - young players need to play in a good environment. You have to protect them. We have other options."
We'll also have coverage of Chelsea's visit to West Ham United available tonight which you can follow right here.
Team news: Manchester City
Kevin de Bruyne will not feature tonight after suffering a minor calf problem in the draw with Southampton on Sunday. Pep Guardiola also has a problem at right-back with both Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta unavailable due to injury.
Vincent Kompany started his first league game of the season on Sunday but the former Barcelona boss is not sure if his skipper is ready to start two games within four days.
Kevin, no way, he cannot play. Pablo I think cannot. Vincent, I think he can, but I don't know today. I need to see training and regeneration [before making a decision].
Team news: Manchester United
Eric Bailly, arguably United's player of the season so far, will not be available until Christmas after suffering a knee ligament injury during that 4-0 defeat to Chelsea. Marouane Fellaini was also an injury victim in that game at Stamford Bridge after that nasty challenge from David Luiz and is not expected to feature tonight.
Mourinho has kept his cards close to his chest in the days since that loss, providing little indication as to what, if any, major changes he will make.
Here we go again. Just seven weeks on from their first meeting on English soil, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola meet again in the second Manchester derby of the season. Quite a bit has changed since then. That 2-1 defeat on their own turf on 10 September was United's first defeat of the season. Since then, they have managed just four wins from their next nine games with just one of those coming in the league.
That win at Old Trafford, courtesy of goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho, sprung City clear at the summit of the league and was followed up with crushing victories over Bournemouth and Borussia Monchengladbach, before narrow wins over Swansea City in league and cup outings.
Since then, Pep has had a problem. His side return to the red half of the city having failed to win a game in their last five. Mourinho may be the man under more pressure in the wake of Sunday's heavy defeat at Chelsea, but both men need something to click tonight.
