Overview
United progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup after they registered a 3-1 victory over Derby County. It was their captain Wayne Rooney who opened the scoring, before allowing the opposition to equalise before the break.
However, second half goals from Daley Blind and Juan Mata helped Louis van Gaal's side seal a comfortable win. The last time the Red Devils faced the Potters saw them suffer a disappointing defeat at the Britannia Stadium.
Stoke enter this fixture after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace saw them get knocked out of the FA Cup. They were eliminated out of the Capital One Cup by Liverpool in the second leg of the semi-final clash on penalties.
Mark Hughes' side have not won in the last eight away matches and with injuries to key players, especially defenders, Stoke will have an uphill task to manage a victory over United. Van Gaal's side will be hoping for a victory as they look to get back to winning ways at Old Trafford after their defeat to Southampton at home.
What managers say
Louis van Gaal: "I'm not a stupid man. I'm an intelligent man and I cannot predict the atmosphere on Tuesday. I hope that we can give the same level of performance as against Derby but we have to play Stoke, another opponent. I'm always honest. That wasn't an exception [the reaction during the Saints game] but OK."
Mark Hughes: "We might have to look at our options, maybe short term from now until the end of the season. It's not an area which we were looking to strengthen so we don't know what is out there. We hadn't given that area the consideration it probably deserves now in the current circumstances. You never know, but I'm sure once people realise that we might be a little bit shy of defensive numbers I'm sure we will get a lot of calls between now and the window closing."
