The body of Nelson Mandela has been laid to rest after 10 days of commemorating "Africa's greatest son".
4,000 mourners - including foreign dignitaries - attended the emotional service at his ancestral home of Qunu.
Mandela died on 5 December, aged 95.
His coffin, draped in the South African flag, was placed beneath a lectern where speakers paid their tributes in a specially erected marquee. Guests sang and danced to celebrate his life as the service began.
Mandela's portrait stood behind 95 candles, representing one for each year of his life.
South African President Jacob Zuma declared Mandela's "extraordinary journey" was now over.
"It is the end of 95 glorious years of this freedom fighter, a dedicated and humble servant of the people of South Africa," he said in a poignant speech
After the funeral service his coffin was carried by the military up the hill to the graveside for a private family burial where only a few hundred guests were present.
South Africa's air force carried out a fly-past as the coffin was lowered into the grave.
