Marcos Rojo backs Angel Di Maria to prove his worth at Manchester United despite poor first season
Manchester United defender Marco Rojo has backed his teammate Angel di Maria to prove he is "the most talented" player at Louis van Gaal's side next season, despite reports linking him with a summer move away from Old Trafford.
The Argentinian international moved to the Premier League giants after the club paid a record £59.7m ($91m) to Real Madrid for his services, but he struggled to even secure a regular starting spot in the Dutch boss's plans.
Spanish newspaper Sport reported last week that Barcelona are monitoring his situation as the player wishes to end his Premier League stay, while his manager would be happy to let him go – and recoup a big part of the money spent to secure his services.
German newspaper Sport Bild claimed Bayern Munich and United are considering a potential swap deal that would see the Argentinian moving to Pep Guardiola's side with Bastian Schweinsteiger making the opposite move, accompanied by a fee.
Di Maria responded to the rumours during an interview with Ole, admitting his frustration at the lack of playing time under Van Gaal but saying he is not planning to give up at Old Trafford.
And now Rojo has backed his compatriot to remain at Old Trafford and prove the boo boys wrong in his second season in the Premier League.
"For me, the player with the most talent at Manchester United is Angel," he said to Goal.
"There are great players at the club but Angel, for me, is one of the best in the team and in the world. It has been a difficult year for him. He had some problems adapting but that's normal. Any player coming to a new country and a new league has to adapt to the differences and that's what happens. But I'm sure he will do really well in the months ahead."
The Argentinian duo are currently preparing for the final of the Copa America against Chile after helping their side to beat Paraguay 6-1 in the semis, with Rojo scoring a goal and Di Maria netting a brace.
