There have been a series of terror attacks in Egypt by militants based in the Sinai peninsula since the 2013 coup in which President Mohammed Morsi took power. Last year militants who pledged allegiance to Islamic State (Daesh) claimed responsibility for downing a Russian passenger jet, killing 224 people.
