Meghan Trainor outraged after Australian anti-gay marriage campaign uses her image: 'So wrong'

American singer Meghan Trainor was furious to learn that an anti-gay marriage campaign group in Australia had used her photo to sway voters.

The All About The Bass singer was informed by fans on social media that the group, under the Facebook name Vote NO Australia, had printed her face on one of their campaign posters without permission. The campaign material, which has been deleted from the group's Facebook account, features Trainor's face alongside the slogan: "My vote is no, you need to let it go."

After learning she had wrongly been associated with the group, Trainor, 23, hit out on Twitter, stating: "I SUPPORT MARRIAGE EQUALITY! Someone in Australia is illegally using my picture for a campaign against marriage equality. So wrong. Not okay. I've said it before, Everyone should be able to love who they want. I support equality, period."

Organisers of the campaign did respond to the controversy and told Guardian Australia: "We apologise to Meghan Trainor and her support base if this has caused any angst or distress. We had no idea who the person in the meme was... We note Meghan Trainor supports marriage equality and we respect her right to her opinion on the matter."

The apology did not stop Trainor from then embarking on a social media campaign clearly stating that she supports same sex marriage. Alongside one Instagram post encouraging her Australian followers to vote, Trainor wrote: "VOTE YES FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY. LOVE IS LOVE."

The Dear Future Husband singer has openly endorsed same sex marriage in the past. In 2015 when asked by the Daily Express what law she would pass, Trainor said: "I would pass gay marriage everywhere. Everyone should be able to love who they want."

A string of Australian celebrities have spoken out to push the public to have their say in the vote to legalise gay marriage down under. Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie told her Instagram followers: "LOVE IS LOVE. Aussie's living overseas like me, register to vote here: http://www.aec.gov.au/enrol/ before August 24th #marriageequality#australia."

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth added: "Dear open minded, free speaking, laid back, life-loving Aussies. Marriage is about love and commitment and, in a country based on equal citizenship, it should be available to everyone! Vote now for marriage equality."

Pop star Kylie Minogue, who has been an advocate for marriage equality, told her 2.35 million Twitter fans: "Aussies! #loveislove & it's for everyone. Today is the final day to make sure you're enrolled. Don't wait!"

American singer Miley Cyrus, who is engaged to Hemsworth's brother Liam Hemsworth, also got involved, tweeting: "Australia !!!!! Vote 4 Marriage Equality! Aussies are some of the most beautifully free spirited and open minded people I've ever gotten the chance to meet! Everyone deserves to love and marry who they choose! I will be even more proud to call myself Aus by association ;) if this law is passed! Love Love Love! It's never toooo much and it's never enough! More LOVE ."

The Australian Bureau Of Statistics will issue survey forms from 12 September so citizens can vote before the deadline of 7 November.
