Overview
Murray extended his winning streak against Feliciano Lopez to 9-0 by defeating the Spaniard in straights sets, 6-2, 7-6(3), in the third round of the Miami Masters 2014 on Sunday.
The British number one needed three sets to defeat Matthew Ebden in the second round, but conveniently outplayed Lopez, needing less than 74 minutes to secure his win.
Meanwhile, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga managed a miraculous comeback to defeat Marcos Baghdatis in the previous round. The Frenchman went down, 4-6, in the first set and was 1-5 down in the second set and seemed to be heading out of the competition.
However, Tsonga grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck taking it to the tiebreaker winning five straight points to win 7-6 (6). The deciding set too resulted in a tough fight but the 11th seed overcame the wildcard entrant, 7-5, in a match that lasted a little over two-and-a-half hours.
Tsonga had bowed out in the fourth round of this tournament last year and with a clash against the defending champion is certainly one that he would have wanted to avoid.
Murray's focus remains on lifting the trophy for the third time in his career as the 26-year-old hopes to become the fifth player to win the title twice in a row.
Head-To-Head
Murray holds an 8-1 lead over Tsonga in overall meetings which three victories in grand slam events. The Brit has also won all matches in the last five meetings between the two.
