Overview

Top seed, Nadal began his 2014 Sony Open Tennis campaign with a, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, victory against Lleyton Hewitt in the second round.

However, he had a relatively easy clash against Denis Istomin in the third round, as the world number one registered a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-0, against the Uzbek within an hour on Monday.

Meanwhile, World number 14, Fognini managed to oust Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round after a hard fought contest lasting a minute more than two hours.

The Italian went down, 4-6, in the first set but ultimately clinched the game winning the subsequent sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Nadal is eyeing his maiden title in Miami and is the strong favourite to emerge triumphant against Fognini. The winner of this clash will face the winner between Milos Raonic and Benjamin Becker in the quarterfinals.

Head-To-Head

Nadal has a 3-0 lead against Fognini in overall meetings all of which happened last year; one of them being in a Grand Slam event.
