The Missing: Vital piece of evidence solves the disappearance of Alice Webster

Last week's ear drilling may still have viewers quivering under their sofa throws, but prepare to focus as BBC1 drama The Missing continues to piece together the complex disappearance of Alice Webster – the young girl who vanished into thin air 11 years ago.

The girl strolled back into her home town of Germany at the beginning of the series, only for it to be revealed that she may not be the real Alice. Yup, things have got rather confusing, yet fascinating, in the five episodes of the second series thus far.

The most effective scenes, as ever, are between Alice's shattered parents, Gemma and Sam Webster (played by the brilliant David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes) – as the trauma continues to ebb away at their deteriorating marriage – and very angry son, played by Jake Davies.

As the family continue to struggle in Germany, the press descend on Eckhausen for a trial. To viewers' interest, a seemingly vital piece of new evidence will come to light as Gemma receives a surprise phone call from Julien – giving her a new purpose to help fight through the dampening pain of searching for a missing child.

Meanwhile, Julien, the French detective played by Tchéky Karyo, is determined to persevere with the challenging Webster case despite his failing health. As he searches for his third suspect, he encounters a name that he recognises. Later, Alice's brother Matthew's behaviour becomes more and more uncontrollable; the teen finds himself embroiled in a violent altercation which sparks life-changing consequences for the Webster family.

The Missing airs on BBC1 tonight at 9pm.
