Tottenham Contemplate January Move For Chelsea Nemesis - Report

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah despite the imminent return of Aaron Lennon from injury.

The Daily Mail suggest Salah, who has impressed in European competition for Basel against English opposition during the past two seasons, could be subject to a £15m move in the January transfer window after Spurs scouts watched him against Chelsea in the Champions League.

Salah scored in a memorable Basel win at Stamford Bridge which followed goals against the Blues and Tottenham in the Europa League last season.

He scored five goals in 29 starts for the Swiss champions last season and at just 21 is one of the hottest properties on the continent.

Having seen first-hand the problems Salah can cause, Tottenham are among the interested parties however their interest comes a surprise given the significant resources they already have in wide positions.

Following the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid Tottenham signed eight new players including Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela, while Gylfi Sigurdsson has already been deployed in a wide position and Andros Townsend has been given more first team opportunities following a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas is also set to welcome Lennon, who hasn't played since the opening weekend win over Crystal Palace, back into the first team and has a selection dilemma ahead of the club's busiest period of the season.

Villas-Boas has already found juggling his squad difficult with Lamela, Tottenham's record signing from Roma, having yet to start in the Premier League and the return of Lennon will only accentuate the need to keep all players happy.

The Portuguese boss is nonetheless delighted to have the 26 year old available again.

"I'm extremely happy, it's been a long time out for a player of Aaron's importance and the team is delighted with his return," Villas-Boas said.

"He's proved year after year how important he is for us and to have him back is a major plus."

"Let's see how he works on the international break," he added on the possibility of a return after the international break.

"Azza has kept his fitness very high with our medical department."
