MTV VMA 2017 nominees: Kendrick Lamar, Katy Perry and The Weeknd get most nods
This year the awards will have gender neutral categories.
The nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards 2017 are out. In a surprising move the network has eliminated the best female video and best male video categories and instead introduced a gender-neutral video of the year.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar is leading the list with eight nods followed by Katy Perry and The Weeknd who have received five nominations each. The Compton rapper's music video for Humble is set to highlight the highly anticipated event.
On Tuesday (25 July) the network surprised everyone by announcing the nominees via its Instagram account. Fans can vote for their favourite singers and bands in eight categories (which include video of the year, artist of the year and best collaboration) by logging in to the award's official website. The ceremony will be aired live from The Forum in Inglewood, California on Sunday, 27 August at 8pm ET/PT.
This year the awards show has introduced a new category titled Best Fight Against The System, which will highlight music videos on social injustice. John Legend, Alessia Cara and Big Sean have been nominated for the segment.
