The Mummy reboot: Sofia Boutella in monster costume spotted while filming in London
Star Trek Beyond actress' big bad will go up against Tom Cruise in the upcoming film.
Universal Pictures may be far from wrapping production on their upcoming reboot of action adventure film The Mummy but one thing that is most certainly wrapped is Sofia Boutella, who was spotted in full-costume by some eagle-eyed fans on the set of the movie recently.
The Star Trek Beyond actress was snapped in-between shooting scenes in London, with the photographs first being picked up by entertainment news wire service, World Entertainment News Network (WENN).
In the outing, Boutella will portray an ancient queen turned mummy, who will go up against Navy Seal Tyler Colt (Tom Cruise). Her character's birthright was unjustly taken from her before she was entombed and she has now has been awakened from her crypt, deep beneath the unforgiving desert, hungry for revenge.
Here, her outfit looks surprisingly understated, paying an homage to the classic interpretation of 'mummy', rather than the creatures seen before in the Brendan Fraser-fronted pictures.
Particularly given Boutella's small frame, it's hard to imagine how she will end up looking like some formidable, supernatural villain in the final product, but we're in no doubt that she will - and that CGI will likely play a huge part in the editing process. It certainly did in the previous films!
According to the production studio, the film will take audiences "from the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London," while also "bringing a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters."
Written by Jon Spaihts of Prometheus fame, and directed by Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman, and also starring New Girl's Jake Johnson, The People v. O.J. Simpson star Courtney B. Vance, Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe (who will interestingly be playing Dr. Jekyll), The Mummy is currently slated to reach both UK and US cinemas on 9 June 2017.
