Music Minute: Sam Smith snubs X Factor, Grammy nominations and J Cole releases new album
IBTimes UK senior entertainment reporter Alicia Adejobi rounds up this week's music stories.
In this week's Music Minute, Sam Smith rejects an X Factor invite, the Grammys 2017 nominations are announced and J Cole releases his new album.
Sam Smith and Matt Terry duet
Bad news for X Factor contestant Matt Terry as his hopes of duetting with Sam Smith during the finale this weekend (10 and 11 December) have been dashed. Smith, 24, had tweeted a message of support to Terry earlier in the series but reportedly rejected an invite to appear on the show.
A source told the Daily Star: "Matt's best performance of the whole series was singing Writing's On The Wall. Sam loved his version so it seemed the perfect plan to put them together. There's still a slim chance but it doesn't look like it will happen now."
The X Factor finale kicks off on Saturday with Matt, Saara Aalto and 5 After Midnight going head-to-head.
Grammy 2017 nominations
After much anticipation, the nominations for the Grammy Awards 2017 will finally be revealed on 8 December. Pop star Meghan Trainor will do the honours of announcing the nominees in the four main categories: Record of the year, song of the year, album of the year and best new artist. Beyonce, Adele and Drake are among the artists hotly-tipped to lead the nominations list but there may be a few surprises.
J Cole's new album
Fans were given a surprise on 1 December when it was revealed that J Cole would be releasing a brand new album, titled 4 Your Eyez Only, on 9 December. Twitter then erupted after the rapper debuted his new song False Prophets, with lyrics reportedly taking aim at Kanye West. J Cole raps: "Ego in charge of every move, he's a star/And we can't look away due to the days that he caught our hearts," and "He's falling apart but we deny it, justifying that half-a*s s**t he dropped, we always buy it."
False Prophets is expected to feature on J Cole's new album 4 Your Eyez Only, set for release on Friday.
