Nadal's coach gives verdict on Federer's defeat in London while revealing Spaniard's off-season plans

Rafael Nadal's main focus at the moment is to rest and recharge the batteries after a long and successful 2017 campaign rather than think about defending his world number one ranking, according to the Spaniard's coach Carlos Moya.

The 31-year-old won six titles including two Grand Slams – the French Open and US Open – to finish the year as the world's top ranked player for the fourth time in his career. He is 1040-points ahead of main challenger Roger Federer, who is ranked number two.

The duo went head-to-head for most of the year with Nadal coming out on top at the end. They are again expected to be competitive in 2018 and the duo, who won a combined 13 titles in 2017, have a lot of points to defend along the course of the 2018 season.

Federer and his long-time rival are separated by 1040-points going into the new campaign. The Swiss ace would have been just 140-points shy of the Spaniard, had he won the ATP Finals.

"Now what we want is to rest and recharge the battery after a long, hard, unbelievable year. Now we are not thinking much about those 1,040 points," Moya said about Nadal's aim ahead of next season, as quoted by Tennis World USA.

Moya also praised David Goffin, who became the first player in 2017 to defeat Nadal and Federer on his way to the finals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London last week.

The Belgian conquered the Spaniard in his first round robin match at the start of the event and then beat the Swiss ace in the semi-finals, which was the biggest upset of the week. He succumbed to Grigor Dimitrov in the summit clash, but the wins over the two best players at the moment would have given him a huge boost of confidence going into the 2018 campaign.

"It was a little bit surprising. It's the first time that he beat him and he must be given a lot of credit for beating Rafa and Federer," the former world number one added praising the Belgian.
