Overview
Two teams who were expected to play in the finals of the men's hockey tournament at Rio 2016 Olympics will instead battle it out for the Bronze medal on Thursday.
Hockey giants Netherlands who were one of the favourites to win the tournament, were thrashed by Belgium 3-1 in the semi-final. To be fair, the Belgians put on a brilliant performance, but in hindsight the Dutch did not have the best of their days on the field.
Barring Mink van der Weerden who scored for Netherlands, the rest of the team had a shocking day on the field, misplacing passes and in general not looking like a team who are one of the best and if not the best team in the sport at present.
The Dutch, who won the silver medal four years back at London, will want to ensure that they do not go home empty handed in what is a match between two equal teams.
Their opponents, Germany who are the defending Olympic champions had an even worse day on the pitch, losing 5-2 to Argentina in the semi final.
The Germans who have won the last two Olympic gold medals, fell to a special performance in particular by Gonzalo Peillat, who scored a hat-trick, with all three coming from penalty corners.
The European team, who had produced result-altering goals in the final eight seconds of three different matches before 16 August, could not produce magic for the fourth time and now will need to ensure that they are at their best if they are to win the bronze come Thursday.
